NEW YORK — The nation’s biggest school system lurched to life Monday, with most of its students making their method back to courses by foot, ferry and subway after a weeklong break since of Superstorm Sandy. About 100 New York City public schools continue to be closed due to storm damage, a lack of electricity or since the buildings are being used to shelter people left homeless after the killer storm rolled through last Monday. That suggests about 73,000 of the city’s 1. 1 million students stayed home while officials scurried to ready short-term space for them at functioning schools or to make sure power is back on at the schools they typically attend.
